Echinopsis (hedgehog cactus)

Echinopsis, or sometimes know as hedgehog cactus, are easy to grow cactus that are wonderful for the beginner cactus gardener. They are extremely drought tolerant and can handle the intense heat of Palm Springs or the mild temperatures of San Diego.

I have had several varieties of this beautiful plant and have been fortunate enough to witness the amazing display of blooms multiple times every year I have had them. Their flowers typically only last one day, but as you can see from the photo they are worth it.

One of the varieties a friend shared with me is called Tempest had over 20 blooms open at once this year. Quite an amazing show to happen all at once. This particular variety unfortunately does not “pup” like most others, so I am not able to pass on the gift of its beauty to others, but I do cherish this particular plant and the wonderful memories I have of my friend who gifted it to me.

Look for one of this beautiful cacti at your local Lowes hardware stores or local nurseries that have a succulent/cactus selection. I promise it will be worth the $5 that you spend.
